Cool Crafts For Teens!
CD CurtianWhat do you do with those old, unwanted, or scratched CDs? Rather than tossing them or letting dust pile up, you can actually put them to good use! Collect as many as you can get from family and friends, and turn them into a hanging, decorative curtain.
What You Need:
Ruler Old CDs
Sharpie
Drill with 1/8" bit
10 mm jump rings
needle-nosed pliers
safety glasses
What to Do:
1. Figure out how many CDs you need. A 15 inch row takes 3 CDs.
2. When you have enough CDs, use a permanent marker to mark four points evenly spaced around each CD; think north, south, east, and west on a compass.
3. Next, put on safety glasses. Drill a hole at each mark you made. Repeat the drilling process, until each CD has been drilled.
4. Lay out the CDs in the shape of the hanging curtain you want to make.
5. Starting with the top row, put a jump ring into the left holes of all of the CDs except the one on the far left hand side (you don’t need to hook anything onto the left side of that one).
6. Now, put rings into the right holes of all of the CDs except the one on the far right side.
7. To complete the attachments, use more rings to join each CD to its neighbor.
8. Finally, you're ready to connect the rows! For the top row of CDs, put jump rings into the bottom holes. For the bottom row, put jump rings into the top holes. For all others, put jump rings into the top and bottom holes. Use additional rings to join each CD to the one above or below it.
9. Lastly, loop fishing line through the top holes in the top row of CDs. Then, you can hang her creation from a tension rod. Watch it sparkle!
Drawstring Bandana Bag
Stitch up a bag to carry your belongings.
You Need:
Two Bandanas 6 Yards of Satin Cord
Scissors
Sewing Machine
Large Safety Pin
Instructions:
- Line up bandanas, right sides together. Sew all around three sides 1/2" from edge.
- Fold remaining top edge down all around 1" from top. Press. Sew 7/8" from the edge, leaving a 1/2" opening. This will create the pocket for your drawstring. Turn the bag right side out and press well.
- Cut three 2 yard pieces of satin cord and tie them together in an overhand knot. Braid the strands together tightly. (Ask someone to hold the end and keep it pulled taut while you work to make braiding easier.) Tie the final ends together in an overhand knot. Trim. Pin a large pin to one end of your braid.
- Push the pin with the braid into and through the pocket all around and out the same hole. Tie ends together.
Tye Dyeing T-Shirts
This simplified version doesn't even require a washing machine!
What you'll need:
Tie dye (Hot water dye is the best because it won't run out. It is purchased from most chemists and specialty stores from $3.00 to $5.00.)
T-shirt, handkerchief, shorts, almost anything that might be of interest dying
Large pot -- metal because the dye does stain wood
Water
Spoon to stir around with
Tongs
Rubber bands
How to make it:
Take article of clothing, gather up a bundle and wrap around the rubber band tightly.
Do this in numerous spots all over the article so that circles will turn up everywhere you want.
Boil some water in a large pot and when boiling tip dye in (sometimes you don't even need to use the whole pot of dye). Add article and stir for around 30 minutes on high.
When finished, take out with tongs and run under cold water to make sure all extra dye runs out.
Dry, then take off lackey bands (rubber bands), iron and your piece is ready to use.
